What’s the pointe?

Regarding pointe, you may take our (Re)Intro to Pointe class without pointe shoes: you’ll just do all of the exercises on the balls of the feet (demi-pointe) rather than the tips of your toes. Many people have taken the class for weeks without pointe shoes. If you do decide to wear pointe shoes, you’ll be doing all of the exercises very basically and in moderation. There are many exercises to help develop strength in the feet and ankles, but just wearing the shoes–even without going up to full pointe–strengthens the legs and feet in a very unique way, so anytime in them is beneficial. Traditionally, when people begin pointe, it’s around age 10 because by then the body is developmentally ready. This basically means that there is a time when it’s too early, but I don’t believe that it’s ever too late. Ideally, people who do pointe take class at least two times per week, but again, that’s  usually with an intention to progress or perform.

How we do it better.

In a recent post on The Dance Buzz, the authors address the annoying problem of competitor copycats. Here are some of the hilights:

“1.  Beating them in the market may be the best revenge (and cheapest).

“…I decided to focus all of that energy on outdoing our competitor instead. We vowed to differentiate ourselves by focusing closely on our clients’ needs. Innovation became very important.”

Instead of spending money suing your copycat competitor, focus your time and money improving your own studio.  If they continue to steal your ideas, remember that they will not come across as genuine because they are missing one key ingredient in running your business… YOU!  You make your business unique – no one can steal that.

2. Find what makes you unique and continue to push your studio in that direction.

“Above all else, I’ve learned that it’s best to take the high road and commit all time and resources to being the best and — not worrying about what other companies are doing.”

Do your customers enjoy adult classes?  Then develop your adult program…”

That’s just what we do: we do it better. “They” put limitations and restrictions on everything (extra fees, rigid cancellation policies, expiration dates, etc.) We just invite people to come and have a great time dancing. Ok, we’ll address The New Year’s resolution thing we’ve all been avoiding….

Like it or not, with the new year comes New Year’s resolutions and many people resolve to get healthy but don’t know where to start. We want to plant the idea that dance can be a great first step in the right direction for both physical and mental wellbeing. Personally, I hate to “exercise.” Dance classes offer a different approach to fitness and an interesting alternative or supplement to the typical gym-based workout routine. Dancing helps tone the body by building long, lean muscles, improves flexibility, coordination, and stamina, and relieves tension. Dance also creates a mind-body feeling similar to yoga. While you’re thinking about your alignment or the exercise or choreography, you’re not thinking about anything else—your to-do list, significant other, bills, etc.—you’re completely present. So, if you’ve resolved to take better care of yourself this year, consider taking a class or two and remember to mix it up (Ballet, Bellydance, Zumba, Hip-Hop, etc.) to keep it fresh and exciting.  Be well!
