See your friends, family, or co-workers in a whole new light!

See your friends, family, or co-workers in a whole new light with a StudioDCFA semi-private class for your next event. For a semi-private lesson (a closed class just for you and your party: birthday/bachelorette parties, office events, etc.) we now have a new easy pricing option: one hour semi-private lessons are $20/person for parties of 5+ or $25/person for parties of 2-4, and may be purchased online: https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=7448

Collecting clothing donations for the Red Cross

If you’ve been meaning to clean out your closets and drawers (to make room for more dance & yoga clothes) or to take that pile down to the Goodwill but keep leaving the house without them, we’ll put them to good use for you. Monique decided that she doesn’t wear close to half of her clothes and so they shall go to the Red Cross by her work. With Katrina, Haiti, Japan, and more, if anyone wants to put together a bag of useful clothes not being used, she is more than happy to bring it as well. We have a drop-off box at the studio, so you can easily bring a bag of clothes to any class.

Another thing that makes us special: our unique class cards

Unlike most places, our class cards can be shared, so invite a friend to class and see him/her in a whole new light! Also, they don’t expire so don’t worry about life getting in the way: we understand, and we’ll be here when you’re ready and able to come out and play.

Be well!

The Fun of Recitals Past

We’ve pretty much all been-there-done-that as far as recitals go, and many are happy to have those days behind us. At The Studio: A Dance Center for Adults, our students are our focus, not the end-of-the-year recital; we are not priming students for a company or audition; there is no intimidation or competition and no vying for a spot in the “company hierarchy.” Our ongoing classes allow students to focus more on the process than the final product.  That doesn’t mean, however, that we don’t like looking back. So many fun memories have come back to us that we decided to share some photos on our Facebook page. Check it out here, and if you’re brave enough, add your memories to our wall:  http://www.facebook.com/studiodcfa

Best false eyelash story?

Ok, what’s your best false eyelash story? My top 3 are: 1. one of my fellow principals calling them “falsies” and not understanding why we were laughing at her; 2. someone gluing them on upside down so they were like closed clam shells; 3. someone actually gluing her eyes shut.

ABOUT THE BROOKLINE EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY:

St. Paul’s Church hosts the Brookline Emergency Food Pantry. Food and money are donated by Brookline communities of faith and organizations such as the Rotary Club, the Coolidge Corner Merchants Association, and the letter carriers. Needed items include cereal, pasta sauce, soups, canned meats, tuna fish, canned vegetables and fruit, and toiletries. Funds to purchase these items are always welcome. Volunteers are always needed.

The pantry is open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every week.

The number of visits to the pantry by individuals and families in need of supplementary free food continues to increase—from under 1000 in ‘02 to over 2000 in ‘05 to almost 2700 during this past year. In particular, there has been a marked increase in families with children using the pantry.  For more information, please check out the Food Pantry’s website:

What’s the pointe?

Regarding pointe, you may take our (Re)Intro to Pointe class without pointe shoes: you’ll just do all of the exercises on the balls of the feet (demi-pointe) rather than the tips of your toes. Many people have taken the class for weeks without pointe shoes. If you do decide to wear pointe shoes, you’ll be doing all of the exercises very basically and in moderation. There are many exercises to help develop strength in the feet and ankles, but just wearing the shoes–even without going up to full pointe–strengthens the legs and feet in a very unique way, so anytime in them is beneficial. Traditionally, when people begin pointe, it’s around age 10 because by then the body is developmentally ready. This basically means that there is a time when it’s too early, but I don’t believe that it’s ever too late. Ideally, people who do pointe take class at least two times per week, but again, that’s  usually with an intention to progress or perform.

How we do it better.

In a recent post on The Dance Buzz, the authors address the annoying problem of competitor copycats. Here are some of the hilights:

“1.  Beating them in the market may be the best revenge (and cheapest).

“…I decided to focus all of that energy on outdoing our competitor instead. We vowed to differentiate ourselves by focusing closely on our clients’ needs. Innovation became very important.”

Instead of spending money suing your copycat competitor, focus your time and money improving your own studio.  If they continue to steal your ideas, remember that they will not come across as genuine because they are missing one key ingredient in running your business… YOU!  You make your business unique – no one can steal that.

2. Find what makes you unique and continue to push your studio in that direction.

“Above all else, I’ve learned that it’s best to take the high road and commit all time and resources to being the best and — not worrying about what other companies are doing.”

Do your customers enjoy adult classes?  Then develop your adult program…”

That’s just what we do: we do it better. “They” put limitations and restrictions on everything (extra fees, rigid cancellation policies, expiration dates, etc.) We just invite people to come and have a great time dancing. But don’t take our word for it (although you can.) Come see for yourself. Check out our schedule online:

Ok, we’ll address The New Year’s resolution thing we’ve all been avoiding….

Like it or not, with the new year comes New Year’s resolutions and many people resolve to get healthy but don’t know where to start. We want to plant the idea that dance can be a great first step in the right direction for both physical and mental wellbeing. Personally, I hate to “exercise.” Dance classes offer a different approach to fitness and an interesting alternative or supplement to the typical gym-based workout routine. Dancing helps tone the body by building long, lean muscles, improves flexibility, coordination, and stamina, and relieves tension. Dance also creates a mind-body feeling similar to yoga. While you’re thinking about your alignment or the exercise or choreography, you’re not thinking about anything else—your to-do list, significant other, bills, etc.—you’re completely present. So, if you’ve resolved to take better care of yourself this year, consider taking a class or two and remember to mix it up (Ballet, Bellydance, Zumba, Hip-Hop, etc.) to keep it fresh and exciting.  Be well!
